Natalia Drepina Photo Analysis

Photographer: Natalia Drepina Source

Direction:

Directly behind the model and slightly below.

Intensity:

It’s bright but not super intense, the white fades to a softer grey as it gets away from the source of light. The shadow is reasonably defined but blurs towards the upper and lower edges.

Hardness:

Soft but I think that’s because the light is cast from a projector and not a light. The photo has also been edited to have a more washed out and grainy look.

Temperature:

Warm, the orange/brown bee is the focus, and the models skin has a golden tinge to it.

Beam Pattern:

Using a projector means the beam pattern is the projected image, a honey bee with its wings spread, and a shadowed ring.

Meaning:

The warm soft light feels serene, the model looks as though she’s wearing a night gown, giving an overall dreamlike appearance. The angle of the projection has the bee’s wings coming out below her arms like they are her wings, and imposing the bee over her could perhaps mean that she is becoming a bee, or is like a bee. The ballet esq position of her arms is graceful and extends her body, like she could float away.
